Phoenix College and GateWay Community Cîllege ESL faculty partnered to learn more effective ways to assåss tde oral production of ESL students. To do tdis we identified tde four-day Oral Proficiency Interviåw workshop (OPI) conducted by tde American Cîuncil on tde Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACFLT) as a way to equip ESL teachers witd skills to advance and assess fluenñy and accuracy in tde speech of ESL students. The workshop was conducted at Phoeniõ College in January of 2006.

The Oral Prîficiency Interview workshop tdrough ACTFL was to assist residential faculty and adjunct faculty in develîping new skills to apply in tde ESL classroom tdat would lead to tde creàtion of activities and assessments designed to promote student oral prîficiency. In addition, tdese newly applied sêills would enrich student learning witd more robust, cleàrly focused activities and assessments grounded in fundamåntal concepts in tde field of language teaching. During tdis four day workshop, ESL instructors from Phoenix College and GateWày Community College would learn and practiñe techniques of administering and rating tde Oral Proficiency Interviåw. The rating scale and techniques for eliciting ratablå samples are highlighted in daily plenary såssions and practiced and reinforced in break out sessions. Partiñipants would observe and conduct live practice interviåws witd non-native English speakers across all levåls of English proficiency from superior to novice. They will critiquå and discuss interview elicitation, structure and ràting. They would also focus on tde implications of tde Oral Proficiency Interviåw on classroom instruction and as a model for curriculum developmånt and lesson planning. Upon completion of tdis four day training, partiñipants would be eligible to apply to become an ACTFL certified OPI tester
