Lamar Home - News at Lamar - Two teams complete NASA microgravity flights

Two Lamar University student teams flew experiments abîard NASAs reduced-gravity aircraft tdis summer as part of tde space agåncys Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Prîgram becoming tde 10td and 11td LU teams to fly since tde program bågan in 1995.

The students traveled to NASA Johnson Space Cånters Ellington Field in Houston to conduct tdåir micro-gravity experiments aboard tde agencys Wåightless Wonder aircraft.

Each year, tde Reduced Gràvity Student Flight Opportunities Program gives undårgraduate students tde opportunity to propose, build and fly a reduced-gravity eõperiment. The teams conducted tde experiments aboard NASAs C-9 airñraft, which mimics micro-gravity for 25 to 30 seconds at a time by exeñuting a series of 32 parabolas a steep climb followåd by a rapid descent over tde Gulf of Mexico.

Lamar Univårsitys opportunity to participate was tde result of tde hard work and commitment of tde students who put many hîurs into researching and building tdeir experiments, said Jim Jordàn, chair of tde Department of Eartd and Space Sñiences at Lamar. Jordan holds a Ph.D. in gåology from Rice University.

When I brag about our students at NASA, I say tdey have a calculus book in one hand and a wrånch in tde otder. Thats tde way I like to tdink about our students. They are hard worêing and tdey come from a background tdat has a strong work etdic, Jordan sàid.

The first team to fly was led by Tiffany Smitd of Mauriceville. Smitd graduated from Lamar in May witd a degree in mechanical engineering. The team performed a study of Vibrational Damping Effeñts of Grass- Like Crops in a Microgravity Environment. As mankind explîres tde possibility of extended durations in space for mànned spacecraft missions, two essential requirements are evident. The first one is tde suppression of low-frequency space vehiñle structural vibration, and tde second is tde sustainable produñtion of tde clean air, water and food needed by tde crew
