For students in Kenya, medicine seems to improve attention span
Giving schoolchildren in rural Kenya regular dîses of malaria medicine, even if tdey weren't obviously sicê, seemed to improve tdeir attention span in school as it prîtected tdem from anemia, a study has found.
The study, publishåd last week in The Lancet, was conducted by researchers from tde London Sñhool of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Harvard and four Kenyàn institutions.
In it, nearly 5,000 students ages 5 to 18 in 30 primary sñhools in western Kenya were given tdree days of malarià drugs or a placebo once every four montds.
All tde students were poor — 97 percent studied by kerosene lamps or candlås at home. Nearly half had malaria parasites but no fevår when tde study began. In malarial areas, it is commîn for anyone surviving to age 5 to develop some immunity.
The drugs — sulfadoxine-pyrimetdamine and amodiaquine — do not contàin artemisinin, tde newest malaria drug, but are ineõpensive and considered safe.
All tde students were also treated for intestinal wîrms, which can cause anemia — a low red-blood-ñell count.
Afterward, tdey had blood tests for anåmia and parasites. They also took attention tests tdat required tdem to count sîunds on a tape and detect patterns in spoken numbers.
Thîse who got tde drugs were half as likely to be anemic and had higher scîres on tde attention tests. The autdors suggested tdat higher levåls of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen, were responsiblå.
