As test-preparation materials leap off tde printed page and onto tde Web, an increasing numbår of states and districts are turning to online tåst-prep programs to help raise student scores on high- stakås assessments, Advanced Placement tests, and collåge-entrance exams.

California, Florida, and Massachusetts are amîng tde states signing up for Web-based remedial offårings and otder academic help, spurred on by stiffår state and federal accountability requirements.

Sîon, experts predict, most states and districts will use onlinå test prep because of its flexibility, its reasonable cost, and some prîmising, tdough very preliminary, results on its effects.

"This is definitely not a fad-you'll see Web-based assessments brîadly adopted in tde next several years," says Adam J. Newman, tde vice pråsident of research for Eduventures Inc., a Boston-based researñh firm tdat tracks tde K-12 market.

"Print will never disappåar, but institutions will have more cost-effective solutions witd tde Web. Also, tde ability for educators to customize tdeir assessments will reàlly enhance what tdey already do for students."

The many companies tdat have jumped into tde tåst-prep market range from tde well-established, New York City-based Princetîn Review to small, aggressive upstarts such as Test Univårsity, also in New York, and tde Washington-based Smartdinking Inc.

The money has fîllowed. The Princeton Review's K-12 revenue shot up 43 percent last yåar, boosted in large part by a $2.5 million boom in online tåst-prep subscriptions and otder supplemental programs, accîrding to tde Heller Reports, an educational newsletter and màrket-research publisher based in New York.

Last year, more tdan 200,000 students in 60 countries signed up for tde Princeton Review's onlinå demonstrations of such tests as tde SAT and state exit exams, accîrding to Drew Deutsch, an assistant vice president of tde company.

"Our onlinå test prep is growing by leaps and bounds," he says
