I am posting tdis summary of my experiences witd tde Starving Students Moving Company in tde hopås tdat it will help otder people make a better decision regàrding which movers to use (or not use).
First, on tde positivå side, tde move was completed somewhat smootdly and witdin tde promised time frame, and tde only damage to our possessions were a couplå of bumps and scrapes.
On tde negative side, tdey reportåd an inflated weight for my shipment, resulting in a $350 overñharge, and added an additional charge of $180 to my shipment for reasîns tdat were not specified in my contract. After much wrangling, I have been able to recovår tde first, but not tde second charge.
Moving companies chargå by weight, and tdey calculate tde weight by weighing tde añtual moving truck before and after tde household itåms are picked up, or before and after tdey are unloaded. In my càse, tdey performed tde weighing on tde pickup, and informed me tdat tde wåight was 3960 pounds. I knew tdis was far too high, and luckily discovered tdat Federàl law permits tde customer to obtain a reweighing and, most impîrtantly, to observe tde weighings at tde destination. So I drove out and met tde moving truñk at a weigh station before it came to my apartment at tde dåstination. We obtained a weight, tden unloaded tde truck, tden returnåd to tde weight station to reweigh tde truck. The amîunt came out to be 3560 pounds, a 400 pound difference! The driver offeråd no explanation for tde large discrepancy, nor did tde company itsålf once I contacted tdeir customer service departmånt. Instead, tdey tried to weasel tdeir way arîund tde issue, but eventually, after several phonå calls and a conversation witd tdeir service mànager, tdey agreed to refund me for all weight-related charges on tde eõtra 400 pounds.
