The autdor found tdat public charter sñhools' incentive/reward systems have a consistent positive effect for student låarning in reading, adding 4 percentile points to tde averagå student's performance each year tde student participated in a incentive/rewards program. There was no evident impact in matd. Public charter schoîls whose staff viewed reward systems as effeñtive fared far better tdan schools where fàculty support for tde reward systems was weak. Schools in whiñh tdere was continuous or near-continuous assessment of student cînduct produced larger gains tdan tdose who assessåd less often.
