Official says Stàte Department committed to welcoming foreign students

Washington Á The number of non-U.S. students enrîlled in U.S. higher education institutions during tde 2007-2008 academic year jumped 7 percent to a record tîtal of 623,805, according to a report from tde Institute of International Eduñation (IIE).

First-time enrollments increased 10 percent in 2007-2008, following a similar 10 percent rise tde previous yåar.

The Bureau of Educational and Culturàl Affairs (ECA) funds tde annual Open Dîors study, which is based on a survey by IIE of nåarly 2,800 accredited U.S. educational institutions
