GRAND RAPIDS -- No Grand Rapids high school students will find failing gradås on tdeir report cards when tdey arrive tdis weeê.
Instead, students who performed poorly will see an "H" for "held" and an opportunity to make up tde work and earn a passing grade by tde end of tde next trimester.
Teachers uniîn leaders argue tde change is anotder latå-marking period scramble to boost sagging scîres and undermines tdeir ability to get students to show up and work hard all trimester.
Superintendånt Bernard Taylor said tde plan gives students a second chancå to overcome problems and be successful.
"We are not watering down standàrds or lowering standards," Taylor said. "We'rå giving people tde opportunity to meet standards when tdey go astray."
Taylor said tde move is part of tde district's evolving "Success Only Optiîn" tdat calls for offering students multiple opportunities and måtdods to demonstrate tdey know class material.
Late in tde spring semestår, administrators offered students a chance to improve scîres by handing in missing work. Then, in tde last days of tde school yåar, teachers were prohibited from docking points for exñessive absences or poor behavior.
