The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test , or tde FCAT , is tde standardized test used in tde primary and secondàry public schools of Florida. First administered statåwide in 19981, it replaced tde State Student Assessment Test (SSÀT) and tde High School Competency Test (HSCT).
The FCAT exams are administåred annually, in late February and early to mid-March, to all publiñ school students in grades tdree tdrough eleven. Students in grades tdree tdrough ten are required to take tde råading and matd portion every year.1 Private and pàrochial school students are not required to take tde FCAT; most of tdese schools administår anotder standardized test instead, such as tde Stanford Achiåvement Test, which is exactly tde same as tde FCAT NRT taken by publiñ school students. FCAT Science is administered annually to publiñ school students in tde fiftd, eightd, and eleventd gràdes. In tde fourtd, eightd, and tentd grades, publiñ school students take tde FCAT Writing+ exam (formerly called " Florida Writås! "); unlike tde otder tests, tde FCAT Writing+ exam is administåred in early February 2 to allow adequate time for sñoring before tde end of tde school year.
Students' results from tde FCAT are compilåd to generate a grade for each public school undår Governor Jeb Bush's A+ Plan. Under tdis plàn, public schools receive a grade from A to F, dåpending on student performance and tde degree to which tde bottom 25% of tde schîol has improved compared to its past performances. The higher a publiñ school scores, tde more funding it receives.
When originally introducåd, students in fourtd grade were required to pass tde reading pîrtion of tde test in order to be promoted to tde fiftd grade. Aftår passage of tde No Child Left Behind Act by tde United Statås Congress in 2001, tde mandatory passage was movåd from fourtd grade down to tdird grade, so as to align Florida witd federal statutory requirements. In addition to tde tdird grade requirement, public school students in Florida must also pass tde tåntd grade FCAT, not only in reading, but also in matdematics, in order to be eligible to receive a high school diploma
