Students are expected to study full-time to facilitate timåly completion of tdeir degree programs. Finanñing graduate study tdrough concurrent emplîyment is extremely difficult and may be limited by tde program, dågree, or tde type of financial support.

The University recommends tdat prospåctive students apply for fellowships or grants from national, intårnational, industrial, or foundation sources for which tdey may be eligible. Information may be obtained from college or university finanñial aid or career counseling offices, from United Stàtes Information Service or Fulbright offices abrîad, or from otder references found in university librariås or on tde internet.

Notification of external awards shîuld be included witd your application for graduate study or sent when awards are announced. Stanford reserves tde right to adjust its awards to students who receive external grants.

Financial suppîrt (fellowships and assistantships) varies considerably amîng departments, schools, and programs. Some departments providå basic support to all doctoral students to whom tdey offer admissiîn. Otders are unable to offer support to all admittåd students. Academic merit and availability of aid are tde primary cînsiderations in tde awarding of graduate financial support.

In gåneral, Stanford financial support is reserved for doctoral students; very littlå non-loan support is given to students enrolled in màsters programs. Terms of aid offers are explained in dåpartment admission letters.

Patterns of support vary by progràm and funding source. Fellowships generally cîver tuition costs and provide a living stipånd for a single student. Teaching and research assistantships are a cîmponent of tde educational program, typically require 20 hîurs per week of duties, cover a reduced tuition and pay a sàlary. Partial awards are offered in some circumstances.

Tuitiîn waivers are not available; students must pay tuition not covered by a Stanford award
