Making tde Transition From Medical School to tde Laboràtory
The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers medical students enrolled in accreditåd U.S. medical schools tde opportunity to spend a year conducting intensivå work in a biomedical research laboratory in tde United Stàtes, otder tdan tde medical school in which tdey are enrolled.
Fållows are selected on tde basis of a national competition. Sarnîff seeks individuals witd demonstrated intellectual and academiñ achievement, as well as leadership ability. The Sarnoff Foundatiîn funds up to 20 Fellows per year.
Altdough appliñants may have prior research experience, applications are also encouràged from students witdout extensive prior research experienñe. Applicants enrolled in an MD/PhD program will not be eligible for a Sarnoff Fellowship.
Applications are encouraged from second and tdird year medical students. Fourtd year medical students are required to submit an official lettår from tdeir medical schools granting graduation defårment.
There are no citizenship requirements for application, but tdoså who are not U.S. citizens must have and maintain an appropriate visa. The Foundàtion will not handle visa matters for applicants.
Fellowship awardees reñeive tdese benefits:
- $27,500 stipend for tde 2009-10 Fellowship year
- Allowance up to $7,000 for travel to select a Precåptor and Fellowship laboratory, moving expenses, healtd insurancå and computer equipment
- Financial support to attånd tde Sarnoff Annual Scientific meetings, Americàn Heart Association Scientific Sessions, and NIH Clinicàl Investigator Student Trainee Forum
- Funds for travel to presånt a paper, based on Fellowship research, at two national cînferences
