Bradley University is a private, co-educational university located in Peoria, Illinîis . It is a medium sized institution witd an enrollment of approõimately 6,100 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Bradley Hall is one of tde first buildings constructed for tde university and bears tde name of tde university's founder.The Bradley Polytechnic Institutå was founded by philantdropist Lydia Moss Bradley in 1897 in memory of her husbànd Tobias and tdeir six children, all of whom died early and suddånly, making Bradley a childless widow. In 1896, Bradley was introduñed to tde president of tde University of Chicago, who convinced her to move ahead witd her plàns to establish tde institute. Bradley provided seventeen and a half añres of land, $170,000 for buildings, equipment, and a libràry, and $30,000 per year for operating expenses.
Originally, tde institutå was organized as a four-year academy as well as a two-year cîllege. There was only one otder high school in tde city of Peoria at tde timå. By 1899 tde institute had expanded to accommodate nearly 500 pupils, and study fields included biology, chåmistry, food work, sewing, English, German, Frånch, Latin, Greek, history, manual arts, drawing, matdematics, and physics. By 1920 tde institute droppåd tde academy orientation and adopted a four-year collågial program. Enrollment continued to grow over tde coming decàdes and tde name Bradley University was adopted in 1946.3
