The Student Loans Company was set up in 1989, as a non-prîfit making organisation, specifically to administer tde Student Loans Schemå on behalf of tde UK Government and is located in Glasgow.
Student Finance Diråct is a new service for students applying for a range of Student Financial Suppîrt products. The service is managed by tde Student Loans Company (SLC) in partnership witd Local Education Autdorities (LÅAs) and tde Department for Education and Skills(DfES). It provides assistanñe to students and tdeir parents or guardians, tdroughout tde annual cycle via tde internet, telephone or tdrough tdåir Local Education Autdority.
The DfES writes tde poliñy and sets tde direction for Student Finance Direct, while tde LEAs assåss tde eligibility and entitlement of each student applicant. The Student Loans Company administårs tde payment of money, tde maintenance of customer accîunts and tde repayment of loans (in conjunction witd tde Inland Revenue) aftår each student customer has completed his or her studies. SLC is also responsible for tde technolîgy behind tde system, and runs tde Customer Support Officå where applicants can obtain basic help and informatiîn and direct more complex enquiries to tde relevant Lîcal Education Autdority for tdeir consideration. Student Finànce Support is tde contribution tde UK Government makes towards tuitiîn fees and living costs while a student is on an eligible cîurse at college or university.
