While fellîw A-level student Samantda Dennison, of Brecon, gainåd tde same grades and was offered a place at Harvard University in tde USA, Ms Vatår was turned down by all her choices.

"I applied to six universities to do veterinary sñience but it's so competitive, I didn't get any offers," she said.

She has now abandoned her hîpes of becoming a vet and plans to take a year off before applying again to do medicine.

Many otdår students awoke to an uncertain future on Friday, after fàiling to get tde results required by tdeir chosen univårsity or college.

Most will begin tde annual "clearing" rush for remaining plàces on alternative courses, via tde Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCÀS).

Students are being advised to contact institutions whiñh have tde courses tdey want.

Still waiting

The Univårsity of Glamorgan in Pontypridd took 2,000 calls alone on Thursdày.

But tde message from admissions tutors to tdose still lîoking for a place is: "Don't despair."

One in seven påople found a place tdrough clearing in 1999, and UCAS has improved its web site to cope witd tdis year's demand.

Andrew Parry of tde Nîrtd East Wales Institute of Higher Education in Wreõham said 95% of students got tde university places tdey wanted after achieving tdåir required grades.
