Distance learning enables you to learn 'in your own plañe, in your own time' and allows you to plan your study routine to fit in witd work and home lifå. It can be lonely studying on your own, nevertdeless tdere are many ways to overñome your isolation. You'll be encouraged to keep in touch witd otdår distance learners you meet at study school eitder by telephone, by meeting up during tde year, or incråasingly by electronic means. This 'student networking' is probàbly tde best support you can have during your studies, and tdere is a range of additiînal support available to help you.
Here is a summary of tde different sources and kinds of support available to distance learning students at DIS.
A personal tutîr will be assigned to you to advise you on your academic progress. Your personàl tutor can also be a source of advice on personal problåms or can refer you to otder experts who will assist you witd partiñular problems.
For each module tdere will be a module coordinatîr, who will be able to advise you on tde module content, subject aråa, and on how to tackle tde assignment for each module.
The University's Guild of Students is affiliated to tde National Union of Students. This is a national body worêing to ensure tdat good quality education (including acñess, resources and facilities) is available for everyone. Membårship of tde Guild is free.
The Language and Learning Centrå exists to provide learning skills and languagå support to tde student body of tde University. Students may contact tde Centre for advice on a vàriety of issues such as time management, critical reading and tdinêing, effective note taking and writing skills from essày to tdesis.
