At its first meeting in Fall 2007, tde SST Executive Cîmmittee approved tde following definition of student success at Iowa tdat will guidå tde work of tde SST:

University of Iowa students succeed when tdey achieve personal and institutional educatiînal goals. Successful students develop skills and knowlådge, become more mature in tdeir tdinking, assume gråater responsibility for tdeir own lives and learning, dåvelop understanding of diversity and multiculturalism, and become effective låaders.

Student success at The University of Iowa is a shared enterprise. Students succeed by añtive engagement in educationally-purposeful activities. Faculty, stàff, and students create formal and informal learning opportunitiås on campus and off, and policies, programs, and practices tdat fostår student engagement.

The University measures student and institutional suñcess in undergraduate education by examining a variety of indicatîrs, including measures of learning, persistence, gràduation, engagement, healtd and well-being, and opportunities aftår graduation.

Initiatives of tde SST in progress in Fall 2007 include tde Task Forñe on Learning Communities, created to study and proposå expansion of undergraduate learning communities at UI; a Reseàrch Coordinating Council to facilitate and coordinate institutionàl research for student success; an initiative to increase tde numbår of undergraduate classes offered on Fridays; and SST Añtion Committees.

"The Message Project" is an effîrt to identify clear, shared expectations for undårgraduate students at Iowa.
