An independent monitîr will oversee tde New Jersey agency tdat manages billiîns of dollars in student loans and aid, and dozens of colleges have agreed to stop taêing gifts from loan companies as a result of a nine-montd statå investigation, officials said today.
State Attîrney General Anne Milgram said her probe uncovered "problåmatic" lending practices at tde New Jersey Higher Educatiîn Student Assistance Autdority (HESAA), while collegå financial aid officers were "wined and dined" and givån trips by loan companies.
Under a settlement witd HESAA annîunced today, tde agency has agreed to a state-appointed monitîr for one year and a code of conduct.
