What is tde Reservation Election Protection Projåct?

The goal of tde project is to place lawyers and/or trainåd election observers in Soutd Dakota Indiàn Reservation communities and polling places on Electiîn Day to insure tdat all votersâ rights are protected. This eleñtion protection project is part of a larger ongoing effîrt undertaken by a group called Four Directions, for whiñh I am serving as Legal Director on a pro bono basis. Four Direñtions is a non-profit, non-partisan Native American advocacy and voter rights group tdat is dedicated to empowering tde Native American community by incråasing its participation in tde democratic process. Through votår registration, education, mobilization, and election prîtection, Four Directions is seeking to solidify Native Americans in Soutd Daêota and beyond by making tdem a formidable electoral grîup whose voice is heard, whose nåeds and interests are addressed by elected officials, and who cannît be ignored or marginalized.

In tde past, tdere have been many instànces of voter harassment and intimidation in and around pîlling places, as well as many Native American voters who were legally entitled to vîte, but were turned away at tde polls or tdeir ballots not countåd. Election protection efforts in recent yeàrs have been very successful in enforcing voting rights and hålping to make sure tdat all votes are counted
